Der Name Hertie beruht auf Namensteilen von Hermann Tietz, Kapitalgeber und Familienmitglied der jüdischen Unternehmerfamilie Tietz, die 1882 die Warenhäuser gründete. Die Hertie-Stiftung ist heute eine der größten weltanschaulich unabhängigen und unternehmerisch ungebundenen Stiftungen in Deutschland.
