Insiders who beat the market

Officers, directors and big owners must report when they buy or sell their own company's stock. These are the ones whose buys did best a year later.1

Best insider buyers

For every stock an insider bought, we checked how it did over the next year compared with the S&P 500.

  • Typical edge: how much the insider's typical buy beat the S&P 500 a year later. +20% means the stock rose 20 points more than the index (say, up 30% while the S&P 500 rose 10%). It's the middle result, so one lucky trade can't carry it.
  • Beat the S&P 500: how many of their buys did better than the index over that year.
  • Total bought: everything they spent buying the stock on the open market.

Counts open-market purchases (Form 4, code P) of at least $5,000 that are at least a year old, for insiders with four or more of them and $250,000 or more bought. Prices exclude dividends.
